A rectal rocket is a specialized dissolvable suppository designed to deliver medication directly to the rectal area, providing prolonged contact with both internal and external hemorrhoids. This form of treatment can be very effective in reducing symptoms such as pain, itching, and inflammation.

Treatment combines two medications: Hydrocortisone and Lidocaine.

  1. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation, itching, and swelling which promotes faster healing.
  2. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic that provides pain relief by numbing the affected area.

To ensure the effective treatment of your condition, it is important to use the rectal rocket correctly and consistently. Please follow these steps carefully:

  1. Preparation:
    • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after using the rectal rocket to prevent infection.
    • Clean the affected area gently with mild soap and water, then pat dry with a clean, soft towel. Make sure the area is completely dry before application.
  2. Application:
    • Position: Find a comfortable position. Many patients find it easiest to insert the rectal rocket while lying on their side with knees slightly bent, or while standing with one leg raised on a stool.
    • Insert the rectal rocket:
      • Remove the rectal rocket from its packaging.
      • Apply a small amount of water-based lubricant to the tip of the rectal rocket to ease insertion.
      • Gently insert the rectal rocket into the rectum, ensuring that the flared end remains outside the anus. This design helps to treat both internal and external hemorrhoids or other conditions effectively.
  3. Frequency:
    • Use the rectal rocket nightly for 5 nights.
    • It is best to use it just before bedtime to allow the medication to work overnight while you are lying down.
  4. After Application:
    • Wash your hands again thoroughly to remove any residual medication.
    • Remain lying down for at least 15-30 minutes to ensure the rectal rocket stays in place and can be absorbed effectively.
    • Dispose of the rectal rocket following its use overnight a small amount may remain and can be disposed.
  5. Additional Tips:
    • Do not skip applications: Consistency is key to healing. Set reminders if necessary.
    • Avoid constipation: Eat a high-fiber diet, drink plenty of water, and consider using a stool softener such as docusate sodium (Colace) daily. 
    • Report any side effects: If you experience any irritation, allergic reactions, or worsening of symptoms, stop use of the medication immediately.
