To effectively treat anal/genital warts, it is important to apply imiquimod cream correctly and consistently. Please follow these steps carefully:

  1. Preparation:
    • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after applying the cream to prevent infection.
    • Clean the affected area gently with mild soap and water, then pat dry with a clean, soft towel. Make sure the area is completely dry before application.
  2. Application:
    • Amount: Squeeze a small amount of imiquimod cream (about the size of a pea) onto your fingertip.
    • Position: Find a comfortable position. Many patients find it easiest to apply the cream while lying on their side with knees slightly bent, or while standing with one leg raised on a stool.
    • Apply the cream: Gently apply a thin layer of the cream to the wart(s) in the anal/genital area. Be careful to apply the cream only to the warts and avoid surrounding healthy skin. Do not apply the cream inside the anal canal.
  3. Frequency:
    • Apply the cream three times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday).
    • Continue this treatment for up to 3 months or until the warts resolve, whichever comes first.
  4. After Application:
    • Leave the cream on the skin for 6-10 hours, typically overnight.
    • Wash off the cream with mild soap and water after the allotted time.
    • Avoid sexual contact while the cream is on your skin, as it can weaken condoms and diaphragms and may cause irritation to your partner.
  5. Additional Tips:
    • Do not skip applications: Consistency is key to achieving the desired results. Set reminders if necessary.
    • Avoid covering the treated area with tight clothing or bandages, as this can increase irritation.
    • Monitor for side effects: Some redness, swelling, and mild discomfort are normal. However, if you experience severe irritation, pain, or allergic reactions, stop use of the medication immediately.
    • Do not use other products on the treated area unless approved by your healthcare provider, as they may interfere with the effectiveness of the imiquimod cream.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that the treatment is as effective as possible. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.
